Women weave a fortune at the ‘Town of Export Excellence’

Women employed in different stages of making a garment in the factory

Little do people know that lakhs of women workers are not only involved in producing these festival garments but also nearly 90 per cent of India’s hosiery. From a tea-shop sized unit with just three women on sewing machines to factories employing thousands of women, the overwhelming majority of all activities in Tirupur city centres around the garment trade.

Women workers play a major role in a number of units here such as knitting, stitching and embroidery. Some experienced women are also involved in cutting, sewing, embellishing and packing garments. With the export orders increasing by the day, there is an increasing need for women workers in the industry.

“By nature women are deft in tailoring and it suits the industry. They are more diligent and punctual and straight forward. Moreover, as the industry also focusses on light jobs such as checking quality, packing and stitching, women take to it with ease,” says Raja M Shanmugam, president, Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA).
