Model Citizen: At 76, he is a foot soldier at Cancer Institute

G S Venkatraman

At the institute volunteers write letters, enter patients details into a computer, key in related data and help the hospital keep a record of innumerable files. The volunteers also counsel patients. Venkatraman has been coming to the institute from the year 2000. Being a volunteer of CRY (Child Rights and You), he has led a team and visited slums to prevent school drop-outs.

“Our team trains children here to perform skits and draw to raise awareness about importance of education. I have been organising such programmes from 2002 and this way, we have brought down the drop-out percentage considerably in the locality,” he claims.

Some of the areas where he has rendered his services include Nochikuppam and Thideer Nagar (near the Marina beach) and Surya Nagar in Kotturpuram. Kannagi Nagar, beyond Tiruvanmiyur, has almost been turned into a model area with the help of these CRY volunteers led by Venkatraman.
