Infusing fresh lease of life into age-old books

Volunteers wearing masks and cleaning books at the library

On Saturday, nearly 50 students of Dr Dharmambal Govt Polytechnic College for Women, accompanied by their faculty, will begin to sort books at the library from 10 am.

Uma Maheswari, the Chief Librarian said, “Most of the books are 80-150 years old. The pages have a high acid content and have turned yellow. So, they have become brittle and are beginning to disintegrate. As this was happening at an alarming rate, we decided to intervene to prevent further damage to the priceless volumes.”

As the volume of books in the library is high, MLS decided to rope in college and school students to do the job. “Being summer, we hope they would like to take up this job as it is one way of spending time usefully. We will teach them to divide the books according to the extent of damage it has suffered,” said Uma.
