HSBC Bank, as part of its corporate social initiative, created a platform for a few NGOs to exhibit their products. Called ‘Helping Hands Mela’, it was a unique annual event that was held at R.K. Salai branch between November 5 and 10. The mela was inaugurated on November 5 by N. Ram, Director, Kasturi & Sons, and Muneer Sait (former national hockey player). The event saw the participation of NGOs such as Sowdambika AID India; Mithra Special School and SCARF (jewellery and trinkets).
The Madras Institute to Habilitate Retarded Afflicted (MITHRA), a non-profit organisation which serves the physically and mentally handicapped, had displayed products such as jute bags, cards, candles and greeting cards, made by its inmates. Some of its activities for the children include running a prevocational section where they are taught candle making, envelope making, embroidery and carpentry. The inmates of MITHRA also run an in-house manufacturing facility for production of crutches, callipers and other tailor-made frames.
